The core of our business depends on the health and vibrancy of the oceans and our overall environment. Royal Caribbean is committed to conserving and protecting our environment through strict company policies, practices, regulations, and special initiatives under our “Above and Beyond Compliance” (ABC) policy. This policy is designed to help us achieve the highest standards of environmental and community stewardship.

In 1992, we launched our Save the Waves program, focusing on waste management and evolving into a company-wide philosophy of social responsibility, environmental protection, and eco-friendly sustainable practices. Our ships are built and retrofitted to operate more efficiently, with less environmental impact. We repurpose 100% of cargo-associated and operational waste, and our wastewater purification levels on many ships exceed national and international standards.

Through our Ocean Fund, created in 1996, we have spent over $13 million on marine conservation and education programs, including climate change and environmental research at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.

Royal Caribbean & The Community

In early 2016, Royal Caribbean and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) announced a five-year global partnership to ensure the long-term health of the oceans. This partnership sets measurable and achievable sustainability targets to further reduce our environmental footprint, raise awareness about ocean conservation among our more than five million guests, and support WWF’s global ocean conservation work. Our goals include reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 35% by 2020 and responsibly sourcing 90% of our wild-caught seafood by volume from sustainable fisheries by 2020.

Royal Caribbean staff are dedicated to making our communities better places to live, work, and visit. Since 1997, thousands of employees have volunteered during GIVE Day, an annual community event with projects in the US, Europe, South America, Asia, and the Caribbean. Our projects include neighborhood development, civic drives, environmental improvement, and disaster recovery.
